Marc Jacobs Spring 2020 Beauty: Sequins, Glittery Eyeshadow, and Star Dust

Marc Jacobs’ dream team at his Spring 2020 runway show created an exuberant display of sequined glittery eyes sprinkled with magic stardust. Legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath and Redken stylist Guido Palau, along with celebrity nail artists Jin Soon Choi and Mei Kawajiri created 60 individual beauty looks for each of Jacobs’ models. The inspiration came from many of his favorite 60s and 70s icons including Warhol, Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger and Jane Fonda and more. Jacobs wanted the looks to feel more like real life, so it was important to bring the vintage inspiration into the modern day. “There’s an amazing cast of characters in the show — some extravagant, some natural,” said McGrath. “Everybody now loves to play with makeup. Some people are truly eccentric, and some people love the art of true natural makeup. Once you see the clothes, you’ll see real characters that come to life.”

The dramatic beauty looks took anywhere from eight to ten days to plan. Among the many standouts created by Pat McGrath was the gold or teal glittering eye make-up accented by dazzling colored liner, completed with crystal appliqués. Another favorite, included the starburst hand painted eyelashes that brought to mind Liza Minelli. Guido Palau’s romantic hairstyles perfectly balanced Pat McGrath’s dramatic makeup with natural hair falling in angelic waves, wispy braids, bouncy coils or sleek coifs that highlighted the unique personalty of each model. “Even if you see a hat and think, ‘Guido got off lightly,’ I didn’t,” he laughed. “For Marc, it’s about the minutiae. He wants to know what’s underneath the hat, why the texture is like that, if we should keep it natural or done. It’s all about feeling the character and who they are and whether people will get that.” True to form, Marc Jacobs left no detail of the styling to chance, down to the fingertips. Mei Kawajiri designed 14 different spectacular nail-art looks, including tweed patterns and a “super Kawaii” design. It was a feast for the eyes.

Get the Look with Pat McGrath’s Ultimate Toolkit

Using all Marc Jacobs products of course, start by prepping the skin with Youthquake Gel Crème Moisturizer. Once that sinks in, correct any redness and cover up dark circles with a light application of the Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick, then add shine to the skin with O!Mega Glaze All Over Foil Luminizer in Jet Girl. Now it’s time to get creative! Create a graphic eye look with the See-Quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Pop Rox and Star Dust, Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Peridot, and lots of rhinestones. (Pro Tip: For a flawless rhinestone application, use a white or nude eyeliner to map out the placement, then use lash glue with a pointed Q-tip or tweezers to stick them on!) Keep the lips less dramatic with a hint of Le Marc Lip Creme Lipsticks in a sheer nude shade – pat it down with your finger to set it in place and sheer it out.
