At the close of fashion week, Pat McGrath and Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau teamed up again to churn out a whopping 90 different looks for each of the models at Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 show, including Miley Cyrus and 50+ professional dancers assembled by renowned choreographer Karole Armitage. That’s 140 faces and hairstyles, 280 eyebrows, and 1,400 nails! “Me and Pat spent the last three or four days with Marc,” said Palau backstage. “There was a huge inspiration board of women past and present that he loves. Marc is always attracted to iconic women. Whenever we do the show, he’s very passionate about women and style.”
This season, you really only need two products to recreate any of the runway makeup looks created by Pat McGrath. The makeup artists relied on two essentials that almost everyone has in their makeup bag: black eyeliner and red lipstick. “When you think about red lipstick and liner, you think of all time periods — past, present, and future,” says McGrath. “It’s a real modern take on beauty, and the fact that we take everything past, present, and future — and that’s kind of what makes beauty today.”
There were a number of beauty looks with winged black eyeliner in varying lengths and thicknesses, including a range of daytime-appropriate eyeliner to sultry smokey eyeshadow, and lips that were perfectly drawn, while others were simply stained, in addition to a few no-makeup makeup looks. “No one can look the same!” added McGrath. “It’s a real play on individuality.” Bella Hadid channeled Audrey Hepburn in thick out-to-there winged eye makeup and a light nude lip inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, while her sister Gigi wore itty bitty feline flicks with bright red lipstick.
Guido Palau’s hairstyles channeled the classics through a modern lens from the 60s through the 90s. Palau kept the hair mostly untouched aside from a handful of sleek ponytails and simple up-dos. The majority of models sported their own natural hair texture using only 2 styling products, a texturizing spray finished with a light hairspray to enhance and hold it in place. Effortlessness is the key, with the end result being extremely achievable for any woman to recreate. “What’s so great about this show is there’s a woman here I think every woman would like to be at some point or has a fantasy about,” says Palau. “Marc’s so great at creating that fantasy in fashion and in beauty, too. You could say, ‘I’d love to have my eyes like that or my hair like that’—and you can.”

To get the look start by prepping the skin with Marc Jacobs Beauty Youthquake Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème Moisturizer to bring the skin to life, in place of blush or bronzer. Depending upon whether you want to go full-on with dramatic winged eyeliner or just add a bit of definition, reach for a black eyeliner like Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer to create the desired length and thickness. To add smokiness, layer on an eyeshadow from Marc Jacobs Beauty Eye-Conic Multi Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Glambition, then blend the eyeshadow into the crease of the eye to diffuse any harsh edges. For a sexy red lip depending on your skin tone, swipe on Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in either Oh Miley, Miss Scarlet, or Goddess. (Pro tip: use a lip liner for a bold pout, or apply the lipstick with your fingers for a stained, I-just-ate-a-popsicle finish.) To complete the look, coat only the outer lashes with Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara for that retro, 60s cat-eye effect.
For hair with that lived-in texture like Miley’s shaggy layered mullet cut, spritz a small amount of Redken’s Triple Dry 15 on air dried hair from the roots to ends and style with your fingers. Finish the hair with a fine mist from Redken’s Triple Pure 32 Neutral Fragrance Hairspray for a natural hold.
