The Top Men’s Trends Spring 2018: Fashion’s Obsession with Short Shorts

The Top Spring 2018 Men’s Trends – Short Shorts

Micro Shorts

At long last, spring is finally here; and as temperatures rise, so do the hemlines, along with our obsession with short shorts. Micro-shorts dominated the runways at Men’s Fashion Week as one of the top men’s trends for spring/summer 2018. Shorts are a ubiquitous element of everyone’s wardrobe for summer, but this season, they’ve been given an update marked by micro-short lengths, and more casual athletic styles. Of course, we’re all familiar with the unmistakeable Chubbies, a standard summertime look. Thankfully though, this season the trend has matured, and is not just for the fashion set.

In New York and Milan, we saw designer shorts with socks pulled up to the calf. Implying the obvious, the shorter the hemline, the taller the sock. This leggy new silhouette is also now part of a revised modern take on men’s suits, with pleated structured short shorts grounded by slim, unlined jackets in a coordinating fabrics. For a more casual take, continue the proportion play and pair shorts with a longer loose-fitting t-shirt or a hoodie. Or take a note from Rick Owens playbook and skip the shirt altogether.

Longer Shorts

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we saw men’s shorts in long athletic styles with the cargo and athletic shorts making a big comeback, along with other tactical, utilitarian features. To pull off this street-savvy look, start by pairing yours with blue-collar inspired short sleeve shirt, and laced up combat boots, and a fanny pack coyly strapped across your chest, or play up the edge with a technical vest and extra long belt.

Aside from coordinating tops and bottoms, color blocking is another popular way to style your shorts. For a more urban aesthetic, choose longer length shorts with a loose, wide leg silhouette and pair with an oversized “dad style” camp shirt. Opt for a fresh floral or tropical print (another inescapable trend on all the major runways).  Accessorize with a thin breezy sweater and thick-soled, strappy sandals with longer length shorts for a relaxed, low-key polished look. From preppy and polished to edgy and rugged, the new styles can be adapted to any man’s wardrobe.
