Todd Snyder Spring 2018: Quirky Dad Style

Like Father Like Son – Todd Snyder’s Father Influenced His Spring 2018 Collection

When you think of Todd Snyder, you typically think polished classics. However, this season; Snyder mined his father’s slightly rebellious wardrobe taste “couldn’t care less” attitude for a quirky spin on American staples. “He always wore black socks, even in the summer”, Snyder says of his father Dennis. “He wore his work clothes on weekends. Because he really didn’t give a shit.”

Though his off beat silhouettes are maintained, Snyder managed to infuse a wide variety of global inspirations from Morocco to France, not to mention his hometown in Iowa. Striped bohemian shirts met with wide leg trousers that had tall cuffs, replacing last season’s pin rolled up trousers. One of the best looks consisted of a tailored black and white striped blazer layered over a sweater, paired with sweat shorts? That’s right, Snyder took the precision craftsmanship of a Saville Row cut blazer and combined it with relaxed, cut-off sweat shorts that seem more appropriate paired with high-top sneakers on a basketball court. But the amazing thing is: the look not only works, due to it’s irreverent styling, but feel like you could practically wear it anywhere. By taking two classic yet unlikely styles and juxtaposing them together, Snyder is on to something. It’s a kind of “I rolled out of bed like this look, where you blindly pull pieces to together without thinking about it. It’s a “…mish-mash of different looks; active, military, sartorial”, Snyder explains.

There was also a live performance by emerging pop duo Lewis Del Mar who performed live during the show. A new collaboration with Timex x Todd Snyder for Spring 2018 resulted in a new version of the Blackjack Watch. Snyder reworked the 1970s classic based on a children’s watch, in sharp black evoking “the noir glamour of fast cars, hot tires and midcentury Monaco casinos – New York style.” As for Champion, Snyder partnered with the brand to update what is arguably “the most iconic sweatshirt of all time”. The classic sweatshirts, tee’s and sweatpants were reinterpreted with a new tailored fit, fresh color ways, while preserving Champion’s original logo and vintage aesthetic. Ultra wearable and effortlessly cool, the collection is perfect, whether you’re off to a corporate meeting, hitting the gym, or simply relaxing on a day off.
