Y-3 Spring 2019: An Exploration of Lightness

Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 is a world renowned fashion powerhouse who pioneered the current athleisure trend blazing across every continent for the past 10 years. Yamamoto was the first to suggest wearing your athletic wear and mixing it with other smart pieces to run your errands or catch a flight, Now the tracksuit has become ubiquitous in almost every person’s closet.

Inspired by the versatility of sailing and parachuting, this season is all about dramatic, billowy volume that replicates the heavy gusts of wind you’d find whether on the open seas or while parachuting in mid-air. By focusing on the human form and natural movement of our bodies, Yamamoto skillfully engineers clothing to enhance and interact with our active or leisure filled lifestyles. Many of the pieces that make up the collection are largely focused on the idea of “lightweight, breathable, packable, technical, and functional apparel and footwear that push the limits of Adidas’ innovation.”

Speaking of footwear, the all important trainer continues to reign as the holy grail of fashion accessories, and Y-3’s brand new Ratio Racer is one of the hottest on the market. The trainers come in a new black and gray colorway, and are equipped with a cool translucent outersole, and modern knit upper for a sleek sock-like silhouette. Other kicks such as the Kaiwa, Kasabaru, and Y-3 Runner 4D were also given updates. Whether you’re after a cool, all black tracksuit (there are several) or want to mix things up with the pop of a colorful anorak jacket, every look exudes worldly sophistication.
