Linder’s Spring 2019 menswear collection is a highly personal interpretation of designers Kirk Millar and Sam Linder’s family heritage and identity. The clothes embody a a fresh authenticity, which is a welcome sight in the midst of overly curated content and perfectly photoshopped images that flood instagram. Though their work is inspired by family history and cultural heritage, the clothes maintain a fresh, modern, androgynous appeal. “My great, great grandmother had a scrapbook full of poems, magazine clippings of flowers, and drawings from her kids and grandkids,” says designer Kirk Millar explaining the unique art and handwork seen on many of the pieces from the collection.

Intricately patterned floral and leaf motifs taken from his grandmother’s scrapbook of clippings from gardening magazines were printed onto wide-legged trousers and matching denim jacket. Colorful woven knit intarsia sweaters feature embroidered renditions of children’s drawings depicting horses, turkeys, and a dog. “Sometimes I worry about my work being too personal,” says Millar. “But then I remember that that’s the point of being creative, bringing a part of your experience to the table.” The idea of preserving a cultural legacy tends to get overlooked and neglected, especially in fashion. However, with Linder’s thoughtfully executed spring collection, the idea seems more relevant than ever.

The breezy lineup evokes a wistful yearning for those languid days of summer. Jeans came in relaxed, loose fits with old school button fly’s, metal rivets and d-rings. A muscle tank top embroidered with the word “BOYFRIEND” in Kirk’s handwriting with a playful heart over the “I” was shown with retro-inspired cropped orange trousers. yet still reads artful and fresh. Luxe leather sandals and croc derby shoes were created in collaboration with Parisian label, “Chapal.” The handwork on the shoes and sandals add to the Bohemian vibe of the collection. The easy separates infused with more than three generations of family heritage harken back to the past with respect, while looking towards the future.
