The Top 10 Men’s Shows Milan Spring 2018

Versace: Through A Millennial Lens

Donatella has been on fire lately. This season, she infused a huge dose of nostalgia by referencing iconic looks and from the label’s 90’s collections. Stand outs from the men’s show include head to toe prints — whether it be completely matching sets, or button downs featuring mixed prints paired with mismatched checked trousers. On another, less audacious note, we’re already seeing influencers styling the understated millennial pink and powder blue tees with “Versace” printed across the chest. The easy tee’s are retrospective yet modern; perfectly on trend.

Les Hommes: Heavy-Duty Hardware

Despite a rise in gender neutrality and an emergence in fluid wardrobes, Les Hommes pushes against the grain proclaiming that true menswear is not dead. Boxy, oversized silhouettes and chunky sneakers exude a tough masculinity that stood out from other shows. Even edgy hardware, ornate ear pieces and facial jewelry help to redefine masculinity and prove that statement accessories aren’t just for women. The strong shoulder and razor sharp cuts met with delicate lacing and fine embroidery to create an eye catching look for this season’s “alpha male”. Even leopard print suits were made modern with stark white high tops – a look we could totally see Zayn rocking on the red carpet.

Damir Doma: Minimal Goth

Perhaps the new king of streetwear, Damir Doma’s men’s show was the epitome of underground cool. If you thought minimalism was in, think again — Bold graphics and prints played with bleach stained garments and artful lace-up detailing for spring and summer. “I’m trying to close the gap between something that we did in the past and something we want to do in the future, which is something that’s much more direct”, says the designer of the ultra-trendy collection. More is more at Damir Doma, and we can’t get enough.

Salvatore Ferragamo: Memories of The Italian Seaside

The Italian label instantly transported us from winter’s frigid temps to those laid back, breezy east coast afternoons on the beach with their latest menswear collection. Mediterranean aquatic motifs were spotted upon both shirts and shorts, allowing for a fresh seaside elegance. Polished pieces meet lax separates to create a refined look for the perfect gentleman. This season, take a note from Ferragamo by styling a lightweight blazer with a casual button up and preppy striped shorts (don’t be afraid to play with shorter hemlines!) for a suave seaside look that still reads refined.

Fendi: Airport Style

Taking a new approach to “casual Friday”, Fendi’s men’s show broke nearly every fashion rule you thought you knew. Weekend-ready windbreaker jackets topping office friendly ties and button ups? Sure. Slide on sandals paired with suit separates? Why not. When it comes to traditional dressing, Fendi revamped everything your grandpa wore and made it that much cooler. The label collaborated with British artist Sue Tilley, who’s cheeky prints appear on sweaters, coats, and bags throughout the show, and interact perfectly with mixed prints in analogous color palettes. Of course logo mania is not going anywhere any time soon, and with Fendi at the forefront of the trend, it’s only natural to see the revamped logo nearly covering every look.

Prada: Graphic Novel

Prada easily made our list this season with one of the most fun shows at men’s fashion week. Honing in on a technical “nerdy chic” aesthetic, the collection made comic culture cool again with bold, action packed graphics printed on shirts, accessories, and even jumpsuits. Speaking of which, the show was filled with utilitarian inspired jumpsuits — one of our favorite trends for men right now. With the ease of one piece, jumpsuits are the coolest look for guys and make getting ready a total no-brainer.

Dolce & Gabbana: Millennial Royalty

For this one, eclectic might be an understatement. Bold metallic three piece suits and rich jacquards saturated the show, but what really captured our attention was the graphic sportswear. Bomber jackets, hoodies, and track pants were emblazoned with opulent embellishments and regal images met with traditional Japanese motifs. Energetic prints done in vibrant colors gave character to even the most traditional button up and trousers ensemble. From athleisure to suit and tie — If Dolce & Gabbana can take royal courts to the streets, you can count us in.

Gucci: Vintage Glam

Anything goes these days — permed hair, shoulder pads, kitschy graphics, and bold prints don’t even begin to cover everything included in the Gucci show this season. For designers Domenico and Stefano, there is no such thing as “over the top”, and we’re obsessing over the liberal styling and playful expression of each look that went down the runway. If you take one rule from Gucci, it’s that there are no rules.

DSquared2: Western Edge

Urban meets western at the Dsquared2 men’s show, and we’re eating up every bit of it. From fringed leather and neckerchief ties to raw denim and pointed toe boots, each look carried just enough of a “wild west” attitude to separate the slick streetwear from the rest. Tropical and leopard prints add a dash of “rock n roll” for a highly individualized look that any guy can pull off with the right amount of confidence.

Ermenegildo Zegna: Sartori-al Style

Alessandro Sartori made his return as designer at Ermenegildo Zegna this season and with him, brought casual cool streetwear. Laser cut leather tops are combined with chic trousers with fluid cuts, creating the perfect balance for a carefree yet polished look. Separates done in lightweight fabrics and washed out neutrals were styled in vastly monochrome looks and defy the summer heat but speak to the freshness of spring. To try the look out yourself, break up the analogous color palette with different textures.
