Whether you’re hitting the slopes or stepping out on the street, cable knit sweaters are a key piece to have in your arsenal come winter. As fall approaches, a cool, patterned cable knit sweater makes for the perfect layering piece to transition into cooler weather. The fresh spectrum of Fair Isle cable knit sweaters and contemporary graphic design elements, most notably at Raf Simons, Tim Coppens, Dior Homme, MSGM, and Valentino are designed to get you noticed. At Dior Homme, bright turquoise and orange sweaters were stitched with phrases like “they should just let us rave” further emphasizing the early 90s techno influence on the collection. Similarly, Valentino used cutout lettering on lightweight sweaters and included thought provoking quotes such as, “Beauty is a birthright, Reclaim your heritage” and “It seemed to be the end, until the next beginning.” Valentino didn’t shy away from using bright yellow and pink along contrasting grey and rust neutrals, with MSGM following suit using a white Fair Isle pattern across rich blue, red, and navy cable-knit sweaters.
Statement Sweaters Are a Major Trend for Fall 2017
As temperatures drop, an oversized turtleneck sweater and a thicker cable knit are just the right thing to wear. The turtlenecks at Louis Vuitton and Todd Snyder covered the entire neck as layering became a central theme at Louis Vuitton, Todd Snyder, Etro, Les Hommes, and Moncler Gamme Bleu. Inventive knits also cropped up at DSquared2, Christopher Raeburn, Damir Doma, Sacai, and Salvatore Ferragamo in longer thicker oversized versions that reached all the way to mid-thigh. In London, Christopher Raeburn pieced together textured squares of dove grey, lime green, and dark charcoal as an abstract assemblage and sent it out with a matching cable knit scarf.
Deconstructed sweaters were also seen at Damir Doma and Sacai, which featured two different sweaters stitched together for added texture and contrast. Damir Doma began with a rust orange cable knit stitched horizontally to a charcoal speckled cable knit sweater, while Sacai’s snow white cable knit sweater was cheekily attached to a bubblegum pink sweater for a striking play on winter white. This season, standout sweaters are the overall theme in knits, and your winter rotation should include a head turning sweater.
