Spring 2017 Trend: Mandals

The Biggest Men’s Footwear Trend is Sandals

The biggest footwear trend of men’s fashion week is sandals, (or mandals as we like to call them.)  Every designer embarked on a travel theme for spring ’17, reworking thick soled Teva-style sandals and strappy gladiators with casual summer suits, shorts, and jumpsuits. Tricked out men’s sandals with leather cutouts, gladiator sandals, or socks with nylon sandals have become a staple and are here to stay. In Milan, big designers like Gucci, Marni, and Fendi showed leather footwear with thick soles and cutouts, making the shoes appear more like sandals. Fendi’s version was laced up like a sneaker, with laces that wrapped around the ankle gladiator style. While in Paris Valentino, Les Hommes and Yohji Yamamoto featured elaborate and embellished gladiator sandals for men with 3D studded straps that wrap around the ankle. Versace, Prada and Hermes showed somewhat sportier versions rendered in nylon with thick rubber soled sandals that added a sporty, casual vibe.
Versace matched their striking teva-like sandals with colored dress socks, while Prada paired thick wool socks with bright yellow, green and red sandals. Hermes and Ferragamo’s utility sandals came in fresh neutrals like gray, olive-green, and sand with thick sneaker soles meant for trekking long distances. So, instead of slip-on sneakers, the next time you hit the street switch them out for breathable sandals.
