Sacai’s original name was Chitose Abe, and she was born in Nagoya, Japan. Her father was an air-conditioning inventor and her mother was a patissier.
She became a designer for World Co. Ltd (a clothing company with headquarter in Kobe, Japan) in 1987. Sacai would then moved over to Comme Des Garcons and worked as a pattern-cutter under Rei Kawakubo. From here that she met her husband, Junichi Abe, who was working under Junya Watanabe at the time.
in 1999, her own fashion label under the name “Sacai” was born. She picked her maiden name “sakai” but change out the letter “K” with the letter “C” as a way to separate her work and personal life.
