Derek Lam was born in San Francisco, California. He came from a fashion oriented family where his parents own a business importing fashions from Asia and his grandparents owned a specialized bridal factory.
Derek graduated from Parson’s in New York City and worked as an assistant designer to the famous Michael Kors brand from which he was soon named Vice President of Design. In 2003, he launched his own label during New York Fashion Week and many fashion critics refers to him as “an overnight success.”
He is known for fabrics that exudes in femininity, plunging necklines and a clean silhouettes. He had won many awards such as the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski for Emerging Talent in Women’s wear in 2005, the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Prize in 2005 and Accessory Designer of the Year at the 2007 CFDA Awards.
Among many of his success, he is also the Creative Director for Tod’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections.
