What to Wear: The Best Milan Trends for Spring 2014 – Nights in White

White a summer must-have, made an intriguing appearance on the runway in Milan. The designers transformed the traditional 3-piece suit into mix and match separates.

Vivienne Westwood lured her audience to India with her world traveler/swashbuckling ensemble. The layering and draping of a multitude of light weight fabrics created a visual tactile feel. Here a model wears a white monochromatic linen shirt with a vest, jacket, and car coat draped over his shoulders. Westwood kept the layers thin and soft with loose cotton pants. The ethnic accessories included a military beret inspired by Bradley Manning completed the look.

Like Westwood, Salvatore Ferragamo added accents of beige and even orange to offset the traditional summer white. The oversized, floppy collar and pushed up sleeves on a jacket draws from the athletic style inspiration of the entire collection. The model sported crisp white trousers that were cropped just above his white derby shoes.

John Varvatos is all about rocker chic elegance this season. It’s dressy but not confining. Both the three-button jacket and linen pants were treated with a crinkle effect to perfect that on-the-road lifestyle. A long silky shirt flows out from underneath the jacket, elongating the torso. The sunglasses and distressed shoes are in tune with Varvartos’ rock in fashion mantra.

Dolce & Gabanna’s suit did not disappoint. This shimmering white three-piece tuxedo with coordinating skinny trousers screams luxury and sophistication. Thai silk and organza are stretched to create a figure enhancing ensemble.

Costume National’s Ennio Capas sought to revive the rock ‘n’ spirit in his menswear collection. He met with Death of Vegas’ front man Richard Fearless to inspire his designs. A rocker isn’t complete without a bit of leather, which was a focal point of Costume National’s pieces. In this white outfit the model wears a three-button jacket with a simple white T-shirt underneath emulating that inner rocker flair. The black straps and buckles on the monk strap shoes perfectly complement the three black buttons on the jacket. The look is simple and cool, yet clearly embodies the rock DNA that is Costume National.
