Tired of the 50 shades of gray? Then green is your new go to color for spring. Well, maybe it’s not 50 shades of green, but the emerald hue is surely giving way to spring renewal.

After several seasons of blue which began in Paris with Yves Klein, cobalt blue and pale icy shades, many saw it coming, and here it is. Green is now officially the new colour for the spring summer 2014 season. We spotted sage green all over the New York and Milan catwalks as the color of the season showed up in varying shades of grass, moss, sage and hemlock for a true palate cleanser.

Not your typical old lady pastels, these new hues flatter all skin tones and the key to wearing them is to go tonal as used to great effect at Maxmara and the enviable green gown at Alberta Ferretti. Roberto Cavalli highlighted the color of the season with a long slinky gown in seafoam green. Richmond’s rock chic inspired collection featured leather, chiffon and silk woven into intricate patterns. He succesfully fused couture elements into a shapely minidress featured in a pastel lime green that would not look out of place in St Tropez. Tomas Maier of Bottega Veneta opted for darker shade of loden green for his airy cotton fifties style dresses. To maintain the lightness Maier attached rows of abstract 3-D frills sculpting mille-feuilles of ruffles down the torso of a day dress using copper metal thread.

Similar to the verdant shade of springtime foilage, hemlock is a summery, ornamental green that emits a vibrant jewel toned hue that is very different from the green of recent seasons as seen at Prada and Acuilano.Rimondi. Miuccia Prada played up the shades’s ocean undertones in a sporty green silk dress embellished with enormous paillettes at the hip and cheeky football stripes. Acquilano.Rimondi took their love of Gauguin, and athleticism, and threw in a bit of African Masai for good measure, working those themes into a gorgeous striped satin dress. Marni’s athletic take on a bomber jacket and skirt are smothered in 3-D flowers and encrusted with jewels.
