The Ones to Watch – Jonathan Simkhai
Jonathan Simkhai’s Spring 2015 show was inspired by photographs he took of broken pieces of glass. His lean femme fatale silhouettes ranged from sportif to fitted, and the cutouts were plentiful. There was sexy, sheer paneling on fractured jacquard dresses in periwinkle blue, white and black with hemlines falling well below the knee. The fragmented placement of silk fabrics on sheer mesh gave a modern edge to what would otherwise be considered ladylike silhouettes.
A standout from the collection was a mid-calf length, periwinkle blue dress with intricate textiles placed on mesh that to the distant eye appeared to resembled lace.
There was a delightful mix of mid calf dresses that were not too precious, a jumbo pair of shorts resembling an A-line mini, crop tops and infusions of sporty basketball jersey mesh on a blush cropped jacket. The angular, sporty panels on jackets and trousers, in mostly neutral colors achieved the perfect balance of edginess and femininity.
