Richard Chai’s Runway is Autobiographical

Using graphics elements inspired by his favorite album covers by Morrissey, Depeche Mode and the The Flaming Lips in the 90s.  Richard Chai managed to replicate his adolescent skateboarding years growing up in New York and the surrounding suburbs. Chai collaborated with his childhood friend, New York based artist Wook Kim who remains one of his partners in crime since the age of 10.

Abstracted from the original album covers,  trippy graphic tees and tanks, made their way into his collection making them a central theme throughout his show. The vibrant, neon prints were used on tees and tanks adding a bold, graphic element to his fresh slant on casual business wear. His new take on silhouettes came in the form of loose high-waisted, fluid trousers paired with over sized sleeveless tops, and trench coats that added a sophisticated edge to the youth inspired collection. Truncated wide belted shorts worn with sneakers harkened back to his misspent youth skateboarding in New York. “Runway clothes are autobiographical and its not about being coordinated its about individuality” stated the designer.  We could not agree more.
