N.HOOLYWOOD’s Working Class Heroes

In the past, fashion has largely been reserved for the people who could afford it, but these days, it seems every subculture is being appropriated in the name of fashion. Designer Daisuke Obana of N. Hoolywood looked to one of the most unlikely of places for inspiration: the modern construction zone. The irreverent Japanese designer who is known for authenticity in his work cast actual blue collar construction workers as models for his cult label, adding street cred for his new line of Timberland PRO workwear to be rolled out globally. Obana suited up his rugged cast in oversized jackets topped with “safety orange” hoodies, worn over loose fitting denim and heavy duty steel-toe Timberland boots.

Volume played a key role throughout the collection which included chore coats and overalls in safety orange, cargo pants and jackets made with the official materials of the construction industry: denim and canvas. Classic denim overalls were also reinterpreted in a roomier silhouette with more hardware and pockets for various accessories. There was red and black plaid and a camo-inspired print set against a sea of vastly muted colors highlighted by pops of orange and indigo. In keeping with the theme, Obana’s models wore their own personalized hard hats with a comprehensive range of revised workwear as they worked their way through an obstacle course of raised scissor-lifts scattered throughout the venue. Graphics included stenciled acronyms and words such as “obliterate”, “organize”, and “genuine” printed on many of the pieces adding to the industrial feel. Fashion doesn’t have to be super glamorous, but it does have to be functional, and today, a pared-down uniform is all anyone wants.
