Leather Up for Summer and Fall 2014

The trend of throwing a leather jacket over a slip dress and putting on boots and heading out the door began over a decade ago in New York.  With the Polar Vortex soon upon us, stylish-and-practical outerwear is a must. Come fall, a leather jacket is an indispensable staple in rounded shoulder styles, as well as tailored pieces loaded with hardware. The iconic jacket was seen on many of the top catwalks in Milan with each designer offering their own take on the iconic cropped outer layer.

At Byblos, Manuel Facchini’s futuristic intergalactic version in light grey leather with a slashed diagonal zipper is the perfect solution for late summer into Fall. Pair with Byblos shimmering yellow and silver cropped silk trousers. The side ribbing detail creates the illusion of pockets

Costume National’s lambskin jacket has a soft and fluid feel with minimal embellishments. The soft cream leather is lined with contrasting black stretched wool. Loose fitting sleeves allow room for heavier layers underneath such as an oversized turtleneck for the cooler months ahead.

DSquared2 designers Dan and Dean transported us back to The Valley of the Dolls with a runway staged to look like a luxury rehab facility, complete with nurses in white corsets trailing behind the models. A cropped animal print pony skin cape is accessorized with black leather gloves, over the top sunglasses, and a cigarette channeling Audrey Hepburn.

Frida Giannini also had the 60s in mind. Giannini took the masculine moto jacket and transformed it into a rocker chick staple using a dusty pink palette and adorning it with silver accent zippers and snaps. Gucci’s fall 2014 collection offers the chicest silhouettes from the 60s.

John Richmond’s collection entitled “Renaissance Rock” features black leather mixed with graphic skull prints. He took a minimalist approach to the punk motorcycle jacket contrasting the textured leather with only a silver zipper down the middle.

Just Cavalli made a loud entrance with graffiti prints in neon brights and a multitude of clashing textures. Cavalli drew inspiration from urban cities creating a visual melting pot with his eclectic ensembles. Here a short cut leather jacket has only one angular breast pocket with a silver snap. The boxy style stays true to the jacket’s origins, but Cavalli spices it up with textured leather.

Marco de Vincenzo’s leather jacket is awe inspiring. Vincenzo’s fall leather coats and jackets are a work of art in themselves with individually sculpted waves of rich colored soft leathers.

At Ports 1961 Fiona Cibani sculpted her jacket with rounded shoulders and ribbing on the sleeves. The white leather jacket is embellished with zipper accents and is belted at the waist giving the jacket a feminine flair.
