Larger Than Life Avant Garde Silhouettes

South Korean designer Juun.J is all about massive silhouettes and for Spring 2018 the designer had volume and shirting on his mind. Pinstripes, double-breasted tailoring and crisp dress shirts all got the same treatment and were blown up to larger-than-life proportions. The crisp shirting notably derived from traditional office wear was imbued with a contemporary twist, literally. The fabric contortion and manipulation of each garment resulted in beautifully crisp white shirts and dresses, with elongated tailoring for men.

The shirting was tied in a bevy of novel ways. Like a cropped single-sleeved knit sweater layered to control the volume of the shirting, in addition to creating a striking visual silhouette. While pinstripes are nothing new, Juun J’s forward-looking aesthetic has influences strongly rooted in his traditional Korean heritage. His latest collection re-imagines classic menswear with a graceful, genderless angle, and conveys a spirit that fuses the avant-garde with romanticism. Between the many layers of fabric, the collection also nodded to Korea’s long tradition of wearing white clothes, or Baeg-Uiminijog. “The literal translation is “white people,” this has been a nickname Korean people have named the ancient tradition of wearing white clothes and admiring purity ,” explained the designer. The closing look was a pleated flaming red/orange dress that is sure to cement Juun J’s reputation in the annals of contemporary design.
