JASON WU PAYS HOMAGE THE CHINESE QING DYNASTY FOR FALL 2012

Jason Wu’s Fall 2012 Collection captured the Qing Dynasty in fine, rich lacquered fabrics and lush furs, adorned with rich embroideries fit for royalty.

Jason Wu’s inspiration for Fall 2012 arose from a question he asked himself while in Taiwan: “What is Chinese?” The question was answered in three looks: military Mao, historical Qing Dynasty and the “inauthentic” Hollywood vision of China, circa 1930-1940. Mao military jackets and button down shirts, as well as sportswear dominated by army green and red, defined Wu’s first look. He captured the Qing Dynasty in fine, rich lacquered fabrics and lush furs, adorned with rich embroideries fit for royalty. His take on Hollywood’s China was over-the-top extravagant in comparison to the previous two themes. Wu almost seemed to be ribbing Hollywood’s inaccuracy, as he weaved floral patterns and shiny golden thread throughout these pieces, even creating a hat with a gold knob affixed to the top. The consistency of the collection was silhouettes fitted with stiffly tailored jackets, high-waisted pencil skirts, slinky cocktail dresses and cinched at the waist.
