Fendi’s Come Hither Eyes for the Holidays

Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi spoke about a folkloric, Victorian sensibility in their latest Spring 2016 collection, but on the runway the collection appeared as if it emerged from Puritan times. Notably, many of the blouses came with extra-large balloon sleeves and high necklines. The impressive array of modest blouses were cut in luxurious leathers with leg-of-mutton sleeves reminiscent of Princess Diana’s famous wedding dress. The impressive hand woven leather and fabrics used throughout seemed almost warrior or armor-like in their finish. Particularly on a key silhouette in the show, a dress cut away at the sides to expose the model’s waistline and a snakeskin overcoat. Some dresses had pockets finished with whip stitching, while others featured a braided snakeskin harness. A few silk printed pieces featured a motif that echoed the graphic stitching or were surprisingly romantic as in a cobalt blue ripple-print, high-neck chiffon dress. You couldn’t tell what period anything was from.” And you’d hardly care if it wasn’t for those damn sleeves which harkened back to Victorian times. See the spectacular Fall 2015 Fendi runway show below.

Karl’s Vision

“Karl was very abstract in his brief,” said makeup artist Peter Philips. “He just gave me some catchwords such as ‘sunlight streaming through a branch’ and ‘a runaway Mormon girl’, and from all of those things, a strong sense of purity came through.”

Using Dior beauty products, Peter Philips polished nude skin with Diorskin Star foundation. On eyes, Diorshow Waterproof Pro Liner in Carbon was run above the crease to create a black, “cartoon-like” contour adapted to each eye shape, which melded into the runway shadows. “Under the lights, it’s discrete and packs quite a presence at the same time.” The strong line above the crease of the eye was also intended to reference the black soles and ribbons from the shoe collection, with toenails lacquered in Blackout 982.
