Karl Lagerfeld’s remarkable career at Fendi ended with the Fall 2019 women’s collection in Milan just days after his passing. In what is sure to go down in fashion history as one of the most memorable shows. The show closed his 54 year tenure at Fendi with a much deserved standing ovation. The first look consisted of double-breasted jacket with white “shadow piping” on the pockets over a mini-skirt. Lagerfeld’s signature white blouse was integrated into many of the looks. Though largely feminine, an element of menswear surfaced in the office inspired separates consisting of boxy blazers, wide leg trousers, and modest silk blouses.

On the opposite spectrum, sheer tulle skirts were paired with high boots and shimmering turtlenecks. European riding elements also made their way into the collection, with preppy high collars and riding helmet-inspired headgear. Although polished tailoring is central to Fendi’s DNA, this collection seemed more relaxed and at ease overall with nude and neutral tones making up the color palette. The sportiness of the athleisure pieces in collection hit all the right notes, yet offer a chicer take on the street wear staples.
