Balenciaga Fall 2016

The Ultimate Anti-Fashion Statement “It’s ugly, that’s why we like it.”

How do you the get the fashion world’s attention in today’s 24 hour news cycle?  By designing garments that look like the ultimate in anti- fashion.

Demna Gvasalia’s debut at Balenciaga was unquestionably one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season. As creative director of Balenciaga, Gvasalia’s is tasked with ushering in the next chapter in the life of the storied Parisian fashion house founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1937.

The designer focused on creating a new modern attitude rooted in inventive cuts and constructions. Gvasalia said “My first priority was to understand the methodology of Cristóbal Balenciaga, his work around the body, and how to do it today, in 2016.” He studied photos of Fifties couture and how the haute models of the day posed, with rounded shoulders, their abdomens concave, “a C-curve.” Gvasalia’s sought to replicate that sense of forward movement through cut rather than body language. At the same time, he held fast to his Vetements approach. “I started by making a list of garments, which is what we do at Vetements. Like the shirt, the coat, the trench coat, the aviator, the floral dress, the sweater. Then we drape—I never do sketches,” said Gvasalia. “And then we ask ourselves: Would our friends like to wear it?” Now he’s determined to “put those garments in a Balenciaga context.”
