Spring 2014 The Sporting Life

For Spring 2014, Milan designers incorporated chic variations of the sporty, athletic trend into their respective collections to illustrate that sportswear can be feminine and sophisticated too. Sweat pants and loose T-shirts are no longer relegated to the gym as slouchy athletic silhouettes get revamped in bright hues and splashy prints.

You can now wear your Blumarine to the gym, work out in Just Cavalli, and then put on your Gucci dress to go out for drinks post-workout. Even designers like Marni and Prada jumped on the bandwagon to embrace the trend, which saw dresses, visors and sport jersey’s reinterpreted into chic separates.

At Blumarine, a hint of glam was visible on a mesh tank top covered with crystals and paired with black silk cropped ankle trousers. Just Cavalli added bright, tropical prints to skin tight leggings that resembled a wet suit. Visors, bustiers, pencil skirts and platform sandals were bejeweled in crystal applique at Marni.

In a nod to the sportswear trend, mesh and fishnet appeared on the catwalk to super sexy effect at Gucci. A raspberry free-flowing, jersey dress inset with black mesh gave a hint of skin. Athletic sportswear details were successfully fused at Prada on color blocked knits embellished with embroidered sequins and paired with sock-like ribbed leg warmers. Salvatore Ferragamo and Jil Sander created the perfect day wear looks, pairing cropped trousers with light weight jackets and cropped tops. Trussardi’s white bomber jacket paired with white running shorts is worn over a bandeau top and accessorized with a python print scarf tied loosely at the neck.

Across the board, many designers also chose to show their collection with pointy-toe flats or flat out chic-opedics.  Come spring, it’s all about the sport sandal. In conclusion, it is no longer necessary to go to the gym, but merely to dress like you do.
