The girls of Sass and Bide are typically known for their youthful, Bohemian inspired clothes, but their Spring 2013 collection felt refreshingly new. A trip to Buenos Aires and Peru provided the inspiration. Sarah Jean Clarke and Heidi Middleton fused together masculine and feminine, delivering a collection that was a “salute to tradition but also a look into the future.” Calling themselves “traditional modernists,” Sarah and Heidi’s predominate use of black and white, clean-cut, modern architectural shapes created a new form of language. The gender play was seen in the tuxedo-like ensembles that were accessorized with cravats and given a feminine touch by putting a flower where the knot on the tie would be. Mini dresses were paired with military jackets with sharp shoulders or sequined epaulet details. The collection also offered a glimpse of their bohemian past with small inflection of florescent orange and eccentric dresses embroidered with seashells.
The duo closed the show by introducing silver into the monochromatic mix. Slender palazzo pants and long floor length dresses featuring oversized translucent silver paillettes left a lasting impression of sexy, cool, sleekness.
