Salvatore Ferragamo Spring 2014: Competitive Streak

The men’s spring 2014 collections have been particularly sporty and Salvatore Ferragamo’s latest offering is no exception. “Precise, competitive, and vibrant” are the three core concepts on which Salvatore Ferragamo’s latest collection was based upon.

A house generally known for enduring style and superb quality, Ferragamo incorporated brightly colored, sporty renditions of the traditional suit. Massimiliano Giornetti illustrated this new direction by employing sportswear elements normally seen on track suits, athletic wear and basketball shorts. He used oversize numerals stitched onto tank tops and sweaters or dangling from drawstrings and zippers to create a much more youthful and approachable collection, while still adhering to Savatore Ferragamo’s design aesthetic.

Giornetti’s new relaxed silhouette was set against a color palette ranging from khaki to pure white with shots of vivid orange, electric blue, and kelly green in natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and kangaroo leather.  The lighter-than-air cottons had paper-like finishes and wools were given a slight gloss coating. Many of the trousers featured a folded open panel at the knee to allow the wearer ease of movement.

Among the more playful looks was a green numbered tank top with the number-one stitched onto the side over white Bermuda shorts, and a blue sweater with a white grid print with matching tailored track pants complimented by a clear PVC motorcycle-style jacket and white leather spa sandals.

Massimiliano Giornetti’s collection successfully merged the relaxed comfort of sportswear with fine Italian tailoring, ultimately creating a more daring and youthful look for the Ferragamo customer. After all, spring is about renewal and trying new things.
