Marni’s Spring 2017 Menswear is Nerdy Grown Up chic
Castiglioni’s nerdy minimalist designs highlight an intellectual who knows what he’s doing when it comes to dressing for the office. Not only can he crunch numbers, but he also rules the workplace when it comes to style. For spring, Marni’s hard-core nerd took the Italian brand’s quirkiness to an all time high with playful wit and verve. The jackets featured straps attached across the front of suits and coats and fabric harnesses that dangled from the waistbands of cropped trousers. Castiglioni placed strips of velcro on everything from jackets, to coats and shorts, and substituted velcro closings for buttons on tailored jackets and belts to twist and distort the fit of tops. Her unique use of velcro added a playful, childlike paperdoll aspect to the garments, with jackets and tops sliced in back and held together by strips of velcro. While trousers came in cropped, exaggerated high-water lengths with several styles sporting square portholes cut out at the ankle.
Leather was another fabric fixation as the collection featured a generous amount of leather trench-coats, wide cut shorts and even leather blazers. A vermillion, red leather trench coat worn over a crisp shirt and tie reveals a hint of an edge to an otherwise straight forward business look. Castiglioni’s otherwise monochromatic collection was offset by a leafy floral tropical banana print and a scientific-looking chemical formula print in child like contrasting colors. Castiglioni’s handsome shoes and accessories topped off the sophisticated, modernist collection with color coordinated “mandals” and chunky black derby shoes with red trim. Castiglioni also incorporated colorblocked duffels, oversized zip clutches, and expandable leather briefcases in retro shades of red, green and blue. Abstract prints and quirky color combinations gave the collection a Wes Anderson kind of feel. Highlight accessories include patterned backpacks and half-rimmed eyeglasses..
