Will New York Skaters line up for Louis Vuitton X Supreme Collection?
Louis Vuitton X Supreme Debuts New Collab
Kim Jones’ zeitgeist ability to pinpoint what direction fashion is going and confirm what’s already in the air is what makes him an exceptional designer. And one of the heroes Jones looked up to growing up was the New York skater brand, Supreme. Jones calls Supreme a “massive global phenomenon.” “What Supreme does isn’t streetwear,” he explained, “It’s American sportswear and was for skaters originally. It’s just menswear, in the sense that it’s what men want to wear. His highly anticipated accessories collaboration with Supreme were among the real stars of Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2017 menswear show, titled “Artists and musicians, friends and heroes.”
The show referenced New York art stars who reigned in the 80s, including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Overall, the collection appeared to have a more casual vibe with chambray baseball jerseys, loose trousers, and oversized sweaters. In other words very luxurious clothes, worn in a louche, casual way like the oversized coats, long sweaters, sneakers and slouchy pants inspired by Basquiat’s penchant for mixing designer clothes with thrift store finds. Louis Vuitton’s new silhouette is looser; with wide-legged, drop-crotched trousers; long sweaters, floppy shirts, and roomy soft coats that are infinitely wearable at any age and look great on everyone. Co-branded goods ranging from a bright red fanny pack to a denim jacquard baseball shirt and a multitude of accessories in Supreme’s recognizable red and white logo on wallets, fanny packs, and duffel bags peppered the collection. One of the most talked about pieces is a $68,500 leather skateboard carrier with the LV logo in cherry red and white with the Supreme box logo in the center. This prompts the question of whether fans of the brand will shell out for the skater logo on leather goods, and skate board carrying cases. or for a LV Perspex case Technics turntable.
Though prices are not yet confirmed, one of the most expensive pieces in the collection is the Christopher Backpack $4,350 USD, while the cheapest is the Downtown Key Holder and Bag Charm $290 USD. Vuitton also recently released a whole slew of Supreme accessories, including a skateboard carrier that’s expected to retail at around $54,500. How about a $68,500 LV trunk?
