Chanel Fall 2013: Karl Lagerfeld’s Global Domination

In tribute to Chanel’s 100th anniversary Karl Lagerfeld unleashed a collection with a single goal in mind, Global Domination. Chanel’s worldwide success knows no boundaries, the brand has something for everyone, young or old. The jaw dropping set for the Chanel fall 2013 show at the Grand Palais featured a spinning black globe with every Chanel boutique pin-pointed with double “CC” flags to commemorate every store since Mademoiselle Coco Chanel opened the first one in 1913.

Lagerfeld has spent over three decade’s reinterpreting the Chanel suit. This season, Chanel’s iconic jackets are enhanced with an intense textural structure. Black tweed is shot with lurex metallic threads or finished with shiny coatings that add a contemporary, urban edge to otherwise black wool. The coat silhouettes were predominantly loose and flared with long coats cut away in the front following an A-line that falls easily over short pleated skirts. Tall black leather gaiters in black nappa leather acted as the base for every look and gave his girls an aggressive stance.

Lagerfeld pared down a one piece suit seen in a pink and black tweed that gave the appearance of a jacket and skirt combination, when in reality it was a coat with an internal rim at the hip. The look was paired with long over-the-knee gaiter boots in black leather running high up on the thigh, leather gloves and a double “CC” box clutch.

Another innovative look was that of “the double skirt,” which unzipped from the bottom to reveal a second layer beneath or a black and white tweed jacket covered in 3D wool flowers worn with a hardware enhanced chocker over a shiny black mini skirt, black leather gaiters and heavily chained black boots, topped off with a pink fur helmut hat.
