Backstage at John Varvatos Fall 2017 “Wild at Heart” show at The Diamond Horseshoe in The Paramount Hotel
In a lounge area designed to hold maybe 50 people, 100 stylists, photographers and models alike were crammed into a small backstage area and stood jowl to jowl as John Varvatos’ super star stylist Yannick D’ tousled and fussed with each model’s hair. If you’ve ever seen a John Varvatos runway show then you know that you can’t walk in his show unless you have incredible hair and the locks of Samson. Yannick D’I’s perfectly illustrated the romantic and retro feel of the collection by giving each model a voluminous “Duran, Duran” style blow out. While other short-haired models like this years special guest “Machine Gun Kelly” were given a spiked up punk do with a rock ’n’ roll edge.
Yannick D’I’s employed a variety of tools including his favorite styling products to achieve the “cooler than thou look” using Bumble and Bumble Thickening Full Foam Mousse, then Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil to smooth the ends, followed by Bumble & Bumble’s Semisumo, then finish and set with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish spray. His trick for creating volume and romantic waves on models with shoulder length hair requires employing a large barrel sized curling iron, then blowing out the hair and smoothing it out. D’Is genius for styling resulted in glamorous “rock star, ” hair with refined waves and texture that captured the duality of John Varvatos’ “Wild at Heart “collection.
