Do traditional fashion shows have any validity anymore? Gareth Pugh, the up and coming English designer based in Paris known for his otherworldly sci-fi alien creations is switching cities, and this season will hold what he describes as an “immersive live performance” to open New York Fashion Week.
What Mr. Pugh is planning involves both video and live dancers, collaborating with Wayne McGregor, the resident choreographer of the Royal Ballet in London, and his troupe, Random Dance in the event.
The show will be more on the scale of a Parisian fashion show with extraordinary production value that project fashion as theatre. “Sometimes a live show can miss the mark a bit,” Mr. Pugh said. “The lights go up, the model walks out, and you lose control of it. It’s really important to not only communicate, ‘This is a nice dress’ or ‘This is a cool trouser,’ but to sell the dream.”
