Atelier Versace Fall 2016 Haute Couture Collection Confirms Donatella’s Comeback

Sheer star power illuminated Donatella Versace superb new haute couture collection for Atelier Versace. The show held at the Palais Brongniart during the Fall 2016 couture shows in Paris featured some of the biggest names in modelling. Karen Elson, Sasha Pivovarova, Mariacarla Boscono, Carolyn Muphy, and Joan Smalls kept the icons coming, while Taylor Hill and Bella Hadid imbued the couture gowns with a youthful element. The show opened with a blush pink cashmere coat lined in mint green satin, with one lapel deliberatley falling off a bare shoulder to reveal a scarlet bustier unerneath the same shade as Karen Elson’s glitter-painted lips. Next a crimson cashmere coat lined in sky blue silk was shown over a lavender slip dress with the perfect attitude of nonchalance. Intricate draping and folding based on Parisian couture techniques created elaborate dresses with swaths of satin fabric that curved around the body. The satin was woven into bustiers, or often draped around the hips to create dramatic trains that trailed behind the models on the runway. The subsequent looks featured mini’s and gowns shaped by swags and folds of fabric set against black accents. Most of the beading was kept to a minimum, but upon closer inspection the sparkling crystals were visible between waves of fabric. The sumptuous satin draping took various forms, from the asymmetrical neckline of a seductive gown, to the floor scraping train of a sequined dress that was draped and knotted at the hips. The swags of satin clung to the curves of Bella Hadid’s otherwise demure long-sleeved red sheath gown lined in a soft blue silk. Each dress featured a contrasting color that worked to add dramatic flair to the structured gowns. It felt more ladylike than most Versace shows in recent past, yet ushered in a new era of strong silhouettes that exude power. This is Versace reaching out to a new generation of women.
