Andrew Gn Spring 2014: An Artful Sportif Collection

For Spring 2014, Andrew Gn debuted a collection titled “The Peggy Guggenheim collection,” inspired by classic works of art from his favorite modern and contemporary artists. Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Georges Braque, Peter Diog, Carlo Mollino, Gio Ponti and M.C. Escher all graced Gn’s ensembles with their most notable works.

Picasso’s cubist eyes and guitars appeared playful and abstract on dresses and sleeveless blouses or neatly tucked into asymmetrical skirts. Braque inspired doves and stars were appliqued onto royal blue dresses and copper and green blouses. “I always say, if you can’t have it on your walls, you can wear it on yourself,” stated Andrew Gn.

The first looks on the runway were rendered in white with black binding trim used to highlight collars, button placards, zippers and raglan sleeves. A slim black belt secured the waist of a sleeveless sheath dress overlaid with black python lace and trimmed in black ribbon. The monochromatic color scheme added a fresh sporty element to the youthful collection.

The artist, M.C. Escher’s fondness for urban landscapes were referenced in Andrew Gn’s modern black and white landscapes on jackets, skirts, and dresses. A languid, deconstructed jacket with the graphic modern landscape was paired with a cropped white top and black cotton trousers. A geometric approach by Gn was evident in a knee length tank dress with Gio Ponti-inspired shapes rendered in green iridescent python to accentuate a slim silhouette. “I took it on myself to transport the energy of their visual language to clothes, just as one can assemble furniture and works of art to create a unique interior world,” said Andrew Gn.

Andrew Gn’s homage to Picasso and Braque’s featured their most famous motifs, eyes, doves, vases and guitars which hail from the 1920s Avant-garde art movement. Picasso’s abstract vases and guitars were inset in juxtaposed colors ranging from yellow and copper, to purple, royal blue and magenta. A silk yellow sleeveless blouse embellished with Picasso’s purple guitar and black and white vase is tucked into a white asymmetrical wrap skirt accented with black banding. The look was accessorized with a bright red clutch that added a fresh jolt of color. His signature piece was an asymmetrical, sleeveless dress in an intense shade of blue embroidered in Braque’s doves and stars.

For the finale, eye catching bodices accented the waists of floor length chiffon over tulle evening gowns. A standout among the gowns was a peplum style black bodice gown outlined by tubular rows of gold threading over a white tulle skirt with mousseline pleats.
Andrew Gn’s collection stayed true to his hard won philosophy “Never too beautiful, never too luxe.”
